Posted on February 6, 2013
designerDAY 2013 is ready to roll -- we're so excited for this year's line up of speakers and for the two new features we've added.  The theme is KNOWLEDGE IS POWER and we're tacking some of the most troublesome issues plagueing design'preneurs this year. First -- we'll have a session by Belinda Pruyne of Business Innovation Group about finding your ISP -- innovative Selling Proposition. Belinda is a business coach who has worked with a lot of artists and creative businesses and she's expert at helping you articulate what makes you and your jewelry unique. Style.com is the fashion site from the editors at Condé Nast. You can follow the runway shows with only a short time delay thanks to the editors and photographers who never sleep! No more excuses for jewelry designers to be out of touch with fashion -- if you're not in NYC and not on "the cutting edge" you can still be in time to make your Spring 2013 collection relevant to what will be happening in fashion. Our trends turn slower and less often but the key colors, key necklines and what accessories 7th Avenue is showing on the runway today will all be of use to you next year. Relevance is always important to your salesmanship.... Read More
Editors spent the morning looking at jewelry and trying it on and taking lots of photos for use sometime later in their stories. That's the purpose of these events -- relaxed editorial planning.
The Press Preview at the Fragments Showroom Gives Editors a Visual Treat and Access to Amazing Jewels
Posted on September 1, 2012
The annual Fragments Press Breakfast is always a great event -- a lovely breakfast with lovely folks looking at lovely jewels. What a better way to start a day.   Fragments showroom began 28 years ago out of a love for jewelry and a  passion for jewelry designers. Janet Goldman has been finding new designers and bringing them to a very wide roster of boutiques, department stores and other stores. She has been their cheerleader, their mother bear and their friend for nearly 3 decades.   And it's been our delight to share in her pride and her passion for jewelry.   The Press Event is the chance for the publicity team, led by the fantastic Danielle Gadi (wish I had a photo of her) to show off the dozens of designers to dozens of editors, bloggers and writers of all... Business Advice for Designers Entering the US Fine Jewelry Market
Posted on August 27, 2012
A few months ago Lilian Raji of the Lilian Raji Agency created a very comprehensive series of events in NYC for the government of Quebec's export division featuring 14 fine jewelry designers. The Jewelry Artists of Quebec event was phenomenal --a monthlong exhibition at the beautiful Aaron Faber Gallery that started with a VIP party and press appointments. It was an organizational tour de force and Lilian did an amazing job. I am proud to have been a part of the designers' educational events; we had a terrific business panel with several esteemed colleagues and then I spent two days doing one-on-one consultations with most of the designers. It's my favorite thing to do -- get to know a designer, their inspiration and their work and help them figure out how it should fit... Read More

Time for Remembering
Posted on September 19, 2008
[This post was written on 9/11 but I was trying the iphone software and somehow it published late. Guess the sentiment is good for any day, though.] Every year on this day I listen to a long list of names being read aloud. I know only a very few ( as many, many New Yorkers do) and then only tangentially. So this day is not too personal to me - except how it is to every New Yorker and American. But every year on this day I am compelled to make my own list. A long list of names of those whom I would miss if they were gone. A list of people who have touched my soul (even tangentially or a long time ago) and for whom a smile of gratitude should be spent. I hope you too make time to honor those names -- those lives -- for whom you are grateful for in your own life. And not wait... Read More

Town&Country Couture Design Awards Celebrate A Wide Variety of Talent
Posted on June 4, 2008
The 13th annual Town&Country Couture Design Awards is a major highlight of the Couture event. This year the voting system included an online first round of judging that let nearly 5000 people view and vote on the 168 applicants. WOW! Talk about viral marketing. After the first round online 80 designs were chosen to be displayed onsite at Couture. Show attendees made the final votes during the first 3 days of the show. Winners and finalists were announced at a fab party at Blush on Friday evening hosted by Jim Taylor, publisher of Town&Country. As Couture's consultant for the designer sector I was particularly pleased (read: out-of-my-mind happy) to see that many awardees were smaller, independant designers. This underscores that  great design is born at Couture... Read More
