Halstead Bead Inc is inviting jewelry designers to enter its 6th annual grant competition for new entrepreneurs in the industry. Deadline is June 6th. The winner of the 2011 business development grant will receive $6,000 in cash and merchandise as well as other benefits. The award was previously known as The Jewelry Design Business Development Grant; however, it has been renamed in 2011. The award is sponsored by Halstead Bead Inc., a supplier of wholesale jewelry supplies. Designers utilizing jewelry making techniques such as metalsmithing, lampworking, metal clay, wirework, beading, or casting are eligible to enter the competition. Kudo's to Johnson Matthey NY; not only did they run a terrific design competition with their first Sustainable Awards but their choice of award has got to be one of the coolest ever. The three winners of the JMNY Sustainable Awards were handed a custom engraved EcoSphere to mark the accomplishment. Through a generous gift from Halstead Bead Inc., scholarships are available for jewelry artists who want to receive business training in the Visiting Artist Program of the Buyers Market of American Craft.      The Visiting Artist Program, coming to Philadelphia February 19-20, 2011, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, will provide one- and two-day workshops teaching craft entrepreneurship -- how to launch a business, develop and promote product lines and price artwork for wholesale and retail sales.      Participants will tour the Buyers Market of American Craft, the nation’s largest wholesale tradeshow where artists from the U.S. and Canadian studios sell their work to galleries, boutiques, museum shops and catalogs. The deadline for packet submissions is June 9, 2010. The winner of the 2010 Grant will receive $6,000 in cash and merchandise as well as other benefits. The Cultured Pearl Association of America has launched the International Pearl Design Competition 2010 – 2011

  The nonprofit Cultured Pearl Association of America, comprised of manufacturers, wholesalers, dealers, and suppliers of cultured pearls in the U.S., has unveiled the International Pearl Jewelry Design Competition. The announcement was made during the AGTA GemFair Tucson, and the contest aims to drive awareness, interest, demand, and marketability of cultured pearls for retailers and consumers. Pearl jewelry submissions can be by sketch, drawing, painted or digital image on a DVD or CD in jpeg format only, and should be no larger than 5" x 11" (any larger will not be accepted). I'm sitting at my desk, reviewing the100+ jpgs that are the entries for a design competition. That's how it goes now with some competitions and many juries, we're not all in a room reviewing slides but sitting at our own offices reviewing a CD. I assume everyone has entered their best design from the past 12 months -- that's usually the first criteria of entering a design competition. When you can enter just 1 or 2 designs - I assume they are what you're most proud of and feel can best compete against your peers' best designs.So why am I seeing so many bad photographs? And some work that is truly redundant? Why put forth in lousy form something you consider your best art?Why enter something that is so common -- do they not know better? Do they not read... Read More
