Designers are Finding Success at The Winter JA NY Show
Posted on November 25, 2013
I truly believe that trade shows are one of your best marketing tools -- otherwise, I wouldn't work with the trade show producers that I work with -- but you've got to work them. And work them hard. That means pre- and post-show mailings and calls and a lot of good salesmanship during the show. The JA NY Show has had quite the turn around in recent years due to a dramatic redesign and a modern marketing campaign. Retailers have been impressed and they're coming back to the show in stronger numbers than recent years. Especially for the Winter show. I was just reviewing the registration list from last year and I'm thrilled to see buyers from big retailers like Amazon.com, Neiman Marcus and HauteLook and from more design-centric independants, too. I love seeing boutique... Read More

MJSA Expo – the trade show for jewelry makers in NYC
Posted on March 13, 2011
Great panel discussion on getting the most from your sub-contractors.   Peggy Jo Donahue of MJSA led the panel of Joel Weiss of Carrera Casting with designers Calla Gold of Santa Barbara and Malak Atut of Zaiken Jewelry and modelmaker Carlos Zamora.   Great info that all stressed the value of highly detailed communication with drawings and not just words.   Patience and respect are vital, too.   Pricing is not that much different from say 1 or 2 of a kind than 50 or 75. Quantity is less a variable than terms. Pay faster and regularly to get the better service and pricing.   Gain valuable advice and networking via great resources. Industry organizations are invaluable for networks and solutions. They gave a big shout out to WJA as well as... Read More

Scenes from designLAB at the JA NY Special Delivery trade show for Jewelers
Posted on October 29, 2009
The JA NY Special Delivery show is a unique event -- it's timed for last minute stock for the jewelry retailers. Exhibitors bring specials, deals, overstocks and regular merchandise to entice folks at this time of year. Each year it has gotten stronger and this year there was true crowds on day one. Unfortunately it's not the day I had my camera in hand plus access to the skyboxes over the show floor for a good shot. I got requests for an overview photo so I'm posting it even though it doesn't well represent the buyer attendance.  This was the second show where JA showcased designers in my newly invented trade show concept -- designLAB. A group booth for jewelry designers that gives each a small display space, shared resources and an open layout. Buyers... Read More
