Use Pantone’s Color of the Year News to Your Advantage
Posted on December 6, 2013
The word is out ... orchid is in.   [caption id="attachment_3613" align="aligncenter" width="773"] Pantone Orchid is the Color of the year[/caption]   Pantone, the international color authority, has declared Pantone's color No. 18-3224 “blooms with confidence and warmth” and is “a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple,” according to the company. In the past 24 hours I've seen it mentioned on social media no less than a dozen times. This happens every time there's a "Color of the Year" or "Color of the Season" announcement by Pantone. We can debate the value of designing around this color -- I don't know if you should jump on the bandwagon for all your new Spring designs -- but I do know that you can have a marketing moment now if you can promote an... Pantone Says We’re in a Monaco Blue Mood for Spring 2013
Posted on September 7, 2012
As Spring 2013 Fashion Week begins the Pantone Color Institute, the color authority, has announced the top colors of Spring. And we're going to be feeling the blues... Monaco Blue and Dusk Blue to be exact. Both are subdued shades of blue which are "practical purchases for any wardrobe ... that can be easily blended into consumer's existing wardrobe," said Leatrice Eisman, Pantone's Executive Director in today's WWD. The next two most popular colors -- according to how many designers have used these shades in their Spring collections -- are also somewhat dusky greens that are jewel tones of Emerald and Greyed Jade. Safe seems to be the mood, no? The punches of color will come from Poppy Red, African Violet, Lemon Zest and Nectarine. Personally, I'm looking... Read More

Lorraine DePasque is one of our most favorite jewelry journalists -- she's been tracking design trends for longer than either of us like to admit (since we're both in our mid-30s you can only imagine that we started in grammar school!). David is one of the fashion industry's most quoted authorities, with international credentials as a fashion, color and trend forecaster. His expertise and entertaining personality keep David in demand as a public speaker and lecturer. It’s Fall Fashion Week and Jewelry Designers Need to Pay Attention to the Trends
Posted on February 12, 2012
On a recent webinar hosted by the Couture show, Michelle Orman of Last Word Communications interviewed Marion Fasel, Jewelry Editor of INSTYLE magazine and asked her advice for jewelry designers. The most important point was to pay attention to the fashion trends -- that rule the fashion magazines -- so that you can pitch your jewelry with relevancy. When the clothes of the season have an Art Deco reference you can be sure that I'll be searching for some Art Deco-inspired jewels, she said. After the webinar I was talking with a designer who lives far from NYC and has been making great jewelry for 20 years. "I don't design to trends but I do want to get more press so maybe I'll try and make some things that fit into some trends," she msued. "But how the heck do I... Read More

WWD Q&A With David Lipman, Advertising Guru
Posted on June 13, 2009
I think there's a bunch of great ideas in this quick interview with David Lipman. Read it all online -- here are my favorite quotes:WWD: What role does technology play in marketing? D.L.: You can’t market or communicate without it. But many people in the fashion world don’t understand how to embrace it and apply it to everyday life. High-tech mobile devices and the Internet are a part of our daily lives now. if you can’t communicate and market online yet, you’re missing out. Those little things that fit in our handbags or pockets are a new weapon, and that’s where I see the biggest opportunity.WWD: Who are new players in the market? D.L.: RueLaLa, a shopping Web site, has product that sells out at lightning-bolt speed. Firms like Amazon changed the way we shop... Read More
