MJSA Vision Awards Call for Entries
Posted on February 8, 2015
Since its first winners debuted at the 1992 Expo New York, MJSA's annual Vision Awards competition has showcased outstanding jewelry design. In 2014, MJSA revamped the program, adding new categories and expanding to focus beyond just design to the business of design  -- to great success.  The deadline for 2015 submissions is April 2. MJSA ensures the Vision Award winners receive the recognition they deserve by promoting their triumph through the industry's leading publications, which in 2015 will include INSTORE, Metalsmith, and the association's own MJSA Journal. In addition, the winning entries will be on display for thousands of buyers and exhibitors during the March 2016 MJSA Expo New York, the largest and oldest trade show in the U.S. dedicated to professional... Customer Types for 2015 Gives You a Publicity Boost
Posted on January 24, 2015
Everyone knows a "sexy soccer mom" or a "couture collector," right? And that's why my column, Customer Types, in INDESIGN magazine is so popular. While we all like to think of ourselves as multi-dimensional more often than not our clothes and jewels and fashion personae can be wrapped up in a few clever clichés. Which is great for sales people because it gives them a shortcut to help the customer out finding that perfect give or new self-purchased jewel. My column appears every issues -- 6 times a year -- and this coming April our Customer Types concept will be a central focus at the magazine's sister trade show, The Smart Jewelry Show in Chicago. I also enjoy giving exposure to designers who make beautiful jewels. I only wish I had more than one page per issue so that I... Read More

MJSA Vision Awards Call for Entries
Posted on March 27, 2014
After a short haitus to redesign their competition MJSA has announced their 2014 Vision Awards call for entries. Entry deadline is April 17, 2014. What's new this year? The categories are revamped so that now the general Professional Category is divided between those working for less than 3 years and those with more experience. This is the first time I've seen this kind of distinction and I think it will give quite a leg up to newbies [translation: ENTER!!!] There's a student category -- a lovely way to support the artform. The CAD-CAM, Laser Distinction and Custom Design categories are back and these  are pretty unique to MJSA, as well. They really do strive to support the working jeweler and give several ways to acknowledge different talents. The newsiest addition to... Read More

Instagram Direct Launches; Will You Use it as a Prospecting Tool?
Posted on December 12, 2013
Today Instagram Direct launched; now you can send images directly to one person. How will we use that in business? I suppose we can use it to pitch editors and retailers since you can send it to folks who are not following you. I could see the potential for abuse there and the possibility for those key influencers to get turned off or leave Instagram altogether. But for those you have an existing relationship with you could use it to give them instant access to new designs, events, insider tips and tricks and even some jokes. It could build a relationship more now that you can directly communicate more. We'll have to wait and see, won't we? Here's the news from Insagram's blog announcement: There are, however, moments in our lives that we want to share, but that will be... Read More
Use Pantone’s Color of the Year News to Your Advantage
Posted on December 6, 2013
The word is out ... orchid is in.   [caption id="attachment_3613" align="aligncenter" width="773"] Pantone Orchid is the Color of the year[/caption]   Pantone, the international color authority, has declared Pantone's color No. 18-3224 “blooms with confidence and warmth” and is “a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple,” according to the company. In the past 24 hours I've seen it mentioned on social media no less than a dozen times. This happens every time there's a "Color of the Year" or "Color of the Season" announcement by Pantone. We can debate the value of designing around this color -- I don't know if you should jump on the bandwagon for all your new Spring designs -- but I do know that you can have a marketing moment now if you can promote an... Designers are Finding Success at The Winter JA NY Show
Posted on November 25, 2013
I truly believe that trade shows are one of your best marketing tools -- otherwise, I wouldn't work with the trade show producers that I work with -- but you've got to work them. And work them hard. That means pre- and post-show mailings and calls and a lot of good salesmanship during the show. The JA NY Show has had quite the turn around in recent years due to a dramatic redesign and a modern marketing campaign. Retailers have been impressed and they're coming back to the show in stronger numbers than recent years. Especially for the Winter show. I was just reviewing the registration list from last year and I'm thrilled to see buyers from big retailers like Amazon.com, Neiman Marcus and HauteLook and from more design-centric independants, too. I love seeing boutique... Read More

Lessons in Design’preneurship by a Host of Experts
Posted on November 11, 2013
Earlier this year I took part in a panel discussion for a delegation of jewelry designers from Quebec interested in growing their business in the US marketplace. Thank goodness our organizer, Lilian Raji of the Lilian Raji Agency had it taped so that other designers can benefit from our collective wisdom. The panel included Randi Molofsky (journalist and currently VP of marketing for Gemfields), Meeling Wong (consultant to many top designer firms), Theresa Poirer (Sales Director of Fragments), Victoria Gomelsky (editor-in-chief of JCK magazine) and Karen Lee (for St. DuPont). So get ready to take some notes! ... Read More
